On the 26th and 27th of August, we hosted our annual committee training (formerly known as presidents training). This comprehensive training equipped university windsurf committee members with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in their roles and positively impact campus. As many committee members are on season and thus couldn’t attend on the weekend we are sharing the slides presented at the weekend so that people don’t miss out.
The topics covered were:
- Planning
- Welfare
- Freshers
- Socials
- Events
- Finance
- Windsurfing
Below will be a short description of the sessions and their accompanying slides.
Planning
This seminar, run by Nicola, focused on how to make the most out of your committee, delegation, setting objectives and prioritisation, running a successful AGM, and planning for the club's future.
Welfare
Often overlooked but potentially the most important topic was welfare. This covered topics such as sexual assault, drug and alcohol misuse, and bullying, while sharing resources and reporting systems to support clubs who come up against these issues. If you are going to look through any of these, we highly recommend this one and for more information, reach out to the SWA and our Head of Welfare - Katie Kitchen - for support and resources. TW: Discussion of SA.
Freshers
In this session, Seb and Reid spoke about how to encourage freshers preseason, gave tips on keeping in contact with your club, and how to run freshers' fair, first socials, and taster sessions.
Socials
With many obnoxious fonts, Katy gave advice on how to run socials, plan a social calendar, organise and execute sports night, diverse and sober socials, and what not to do when running university nights out.
Events
Jane’s session centred around the event series, giving insight into the different types of events we run, how to get people to events, and how our racing series works.
Finance
Seb’s finance talk was a wealth of knowledge (pun fully intended). He spoke about creating a budget, getting more for your money, and keeping track of and managing spending.
Windsurfing
Finally, we covered a pretty important component of student windsurfing… windsurfing. This covered finding a suitable lake for beginners, trips suited to all abilities, the benefits of owning and renting kit, instructor courses, and how to source kit.
